COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio is gearing up to celebrate the United States’ semiquincentennial in grand fashion. America 250-Ohio has officially declared July 2026 as “Ohio Gathers: Statewide Homecoming & Picnics” month, launching a massive lineup of parades, vintage baseball games, public readings, and festivals across all 88 counties.

The July theme is meticulously timed to align with two monumental milestones: the nation’s 250th birthday on July 4, and the 250th anniversary of the very first public reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 8.

“There’s something powerful about neighbors coming together over a shared meal, especially in a year when we’re celebrating 250 years of community and progress,” said Todd Kleismit, executive director of America 250-Ohio.

The Signature Homecoming Events

The crown jewels of the July calendar are three massive, regional “Signature Homecoming & Picnic” events designed to bring communities together on an unprecedented scale:

  • July 4 (Columbus): Centered at the Ohio Statehouse, Columbus Commons, and the Ohio Theatre from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., this mega-celebration features a Columbus Symphony “Celebrates America” concert, vintage baseball played by the Ohio Village Muffins, a community reading of the Declaration of Independence, food trucks, and live movies.
  • July 11 (Toledo): Held on the Toledo Museum of Art’s Glass Pavilion Lawn from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., this free festival marks both the U.S. 250th and the museum’s 125th anniversary. It features live glassblowing demonstrations, music, and living history interpreters.
  • July 18 (Cincinnati Area): “The Great Picnic” takes over the Miami Whitewater Forest in partnership with Great Parks of Hamilton County. Families can enjoy a pie-eating contest, a vintage baseball game, a B-25 bomber flyover, and live music from the hit band Blessid Union of Souls.

Recreating History: The July 8 Statewide Reading

On July 8 at precisely 6:00 p.m., Ohioans will take part in a simultaneous, nationwide public reading of the Declaration of Independence, perfectly mirroring the moment the historic document was first read aloud to the public 250 years ago.

More than a dozen Ohio municipalities have already registered to host synchronized readings—including Kent, North Ridgeville, Green, Mechanicsburg, Greenville, North Bend, and Forest Park—with more communities adding locations daily.

Extended 4th Grade History Pass “Plus”

July also marks the peak month for the 4th Grade History Pass Plus program. Sponsored by corporate partners GE Aerospace, Nordson Corporation, and Honda, the pass allows any Ohio fourth-grade student—plus up to three accompanying family members—free admission to approximately 50 historic sites and museums statewide.

The pass is valid through July 31 at landmark locations including the Ohio History Center in Columbus, the Cincinnati Museum Center, the Western Reserve Historical Society in Cleveland, and the Fort Meigs Historic Site in Perrysburg.

Historical Partner Highlights

Several state and local entities are hosting specialized history-themed celebrations throughout the month:

  • Marblehead Lighthouse Legacy Festival (July 4): The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is hosting a lakeside cookout with games and swimming, capped off by views of the Cedar Point fireworks over Lake Erie.
  • Hayes Presidential Library Concert (July 4): Located in Fremont, the event features tours of President Rutherford B. Hayes’ Victorian mansion and the Toledo Concert Band performing the “1812 Overture” complete with live cannon fire.
  • Twilight on the Battlefield (July 11): An immersive living history evening at the Battle of Fallen Timbers Monument in Maumee, honoring the 232nd anniversary of the 1794 battle alongside the nation’s 250th.
  • Ohio Goes to the Movies (All Month): The 250-day, 88-county film series continues across Ohio, featuring unique events like a live stuntman demonstration before a screening of Air Force One in Mentor, alongside various local drive-in double features.
