PICKAWAY COUNTY, Ohio — In recognition of Flag Day 2026, Boy Scout Troop 170 hosted a community flag retirement ceremony at Canal Park on June 15, bringing together scouts and local residents to honor the American flag through a longstanding patriotic tradition.

The ceremony provided an opportunity for community members to properly retire worn, faded, and tattered American flags in accordance with the U.S. Flag Code. Scouts led the event, with residents assisting in the respectful retirement of flags that were no longer fit for display.

The event followed the observance of Flag Day on June 14, which commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. Flag Day serves as a reminder of the flag’s role as a symbol of national unity, freedom, and the sacrifices made by generations of Americans.

Throughout the ceremony, Troop 170 members demonstrated proper flag etiquette and the traditions associated with honoring the nation’s flag. Flag retirement ceremonies are a core part of Scouting’s commitment to citizenship, service, and respect for American values.

Community members attending the event were able to participate in the meaningful tradition while learning about the importance of properly disposing of unserviceable flags. According to the U.S. Flag Code, flags that are no longer suitable for display should be retired in a dignified manner, often through a ceremonial burning conducted with respect and honor.

Organizers said the event reflected the community’s continued commitment to patriotism and civic responsibility while providing a fitting tribute during the Flag Day observance.
