LAURELVILLE, OH — One of Southern Ohio’s most rugged and scenic escapes just got a major modern makeover. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) held a ribbon-cutting ceremony today to unveil a suite of significant upgrades at Tar Hollow State Park, ranging from high-tech campsites to essential environmental protections.

The project represents a massive investment in the visitor experience at the park, which is nestled within the sprawling 16,000-acre Tar Hollow State Forest.
Modern Comforts in the Wild
The most anticipated addition for regular visitors is the debut of full hook-up campsites. Campers can now enjoy upgraded electric, water, and sewer connections directly at their sites. To support these new amenities, the park replaced its aging electrical and sewer systems and installed a brand-new sewer treatment plant to ensure long-term environmental protection for the surrounding forest.
“These improvements reflect our commitment to preserving Ohio’s natural spaces while providing visitors with high-quality facilities,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “These upgrades ensure Tar Hollow remains welcoming, accessible, and enjoyable for all.”

New Amenities for Families and Students
The renovation wasn’t just about what’s underground; several new structures have transformed the park’s surface:
- New Education Center: A versatile building designed to host nature programming, community events, and group activities.
- Upgraded Facilities: A brand-new shower house and four newly constructed flush restrooms have been strategically placed in high-traffic areas.
- Playground: A modern, safe play area for children was added to enhance the family camping experience.
Safety and Stability
Engineers also tackled the challenging terrain of the region by completing road slip repairs. These repairs addressed several erosion issues that had previously plagued the park’s winding roads, ensuring safer travel for hikers and trailers alike.
A Gold Medal Standard
The upgrades come at a time of national recognition for Ohio’s outdoors. In 2025, the ODNR Division of Parks and Watercraft was awarded the National Gold Medal Award, naming Ohio the No. 1 state park system in America.
With the completion of the Tar Hollow project, the park is now better equipped to handle the growing number of outdoor enthusiasts who flock to the area for its famous hiking trails and dense, “hollow” forest canopy.
