ROSS COUNTY – A Ross county dispatcher has been rewarded for quick actions that helped save a fellow first responder.

A ceremony that was held at the Fraternal order of police of Ohio over the weekend recognized dispatcher Taylor Matson for her actions on the shooting of Sgt. Eric Kocheran.

On November 17, 2022, Dispatcher Matson heard what she later discovered were gunshots. Moments later she was notified a deputy was down. Disp. Matson went to the back door of the Law Complex and discovered the deputy. Unknown as to where the suspect was or his condition, she began to administer first aid, and provide comfort to the deputy.

“What is normally expected of our police officers, to go to the emergency, Dispatcher Matson took the initiative and courageously performed a selfless act. Doctors say that if it was not for her actions, the outcome would have been more dire.”

What the dispatcher did not know while lending aid to the Sgt. was that the suspect who had just shot him was just feet away outside the building.

The suspect who was also shot when the Sgt. returned fire later died from the injuries.
