LANCASTER, Ohio — In a powerful display of youth leadership, the Fairfield County Foundation’s Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) has officially announced the distribution of $20,210 in grants to 11 local organizations.
The funding, provided by the George and Dollie L. Zimpfer Memorial Fund, was awarded following a rigorous review process conducted entirely by high school juniors and seniors from across the county. This year’s 19-member committee represented nine different high schools, tasking themselves with identifying projects that would most effectively benefit their peers and the community at large.
Empowering the Community
The 2025-2026 grant recipients span a wide range of services, from public safety and athletic renovations to arts education and food security:
- Safety & Preparedness: The American Red Cross of South-Central Ohio will provide “Key to Home Fire” lockboxes.
- Athletics & Recreation: Berne Township Baseball & Softball will renovate their dugouts, and Geneva Hills Group, Inc. will replace lifeguard chairs.
- Nutrition: Breakfast 4 U received funding to continue their monthly breakfast program for Pleasantville area students.
- The Arts: Rise Up Arts Alliance will upgrade its production software, and the Salvation Army will fund a new music school initiative.
- Youth Engagement: Destination Downtown Lancaster will develop a “Downtown Youth Passport Program,” while Young Life will expand its community outreach.
- Inclusion & Literacy: Buckeye Ridge Rescue will implement “Sensory Seekers” equipment, Girls on the Run will support a team at Gorsuch West, and the YMCA will purchase books for its “Gift of Time” event.
Learning the World of Nonprofits
Established in 2018, the YAC was designed to give students a “seat at the table.” Beyond just signing checks, the committee members are responsible for conducting site visits, reviewing complex submissions, and presenting their final recommendations to the Foundation’s Board of Trustees.
“It’s incredible to see the enthusiasm and dedication of these young leaders,” said Amy Eyman, CEO of the Fairfield County Foundation. “They are really taking advantage of this opportunity and learning everything they can about the world of nonprofits and the needs of their community.”
For the students involved, the experience provides a unique perspective on the challenges facing Fairfield County. One committee member described the role as an opportunity to “explore the nonprofit organizations of our community and contribute to the goal of helping our community flourish.”
