COLUMBUS, Ohio — This Memorial Day weekend, the turf at Ohio State University’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium will transform into a proving ground of grit and remembrance. On Friday, May 22, OSU will host “The Murph,” a legendary fitness challenge dedicated to the memory of Navy SEAL Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy.
The event is more than a test of physical endurance; it is a global tradition that honors the ultimate sacrifice made by Murphy during a fierce firefight in the mountains of Afghanistan on June 28, 2005.

The Man Behind the Mission
At just 29 years old, LT Murphy knowingly exposed himself to enemy fire to reach high ground and radio for help to save his pinned-down team. For his selfless courage, he was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor—the first member of the U.S. Navy to receive the distinction since the Vietnam War.
Murphy’s favorite grueling training regimen, which he originally called “Body Armor,” has since been renamed “The Murph” in his honor.
The Challenge
The workout is notoriously difficult, designed to push participants both mentally and physically:
- 1-Mile Run
- 100 Pull-ups
- 200 Push-ups
- 300 Air Squats
- 1-Mile Run
While the full version is often performed wearing a 20-lb weighted vest, organizers emphasize that the OSU event is inclusive. Participants are encouraged to join solo or in teams, and the movements can be scaled to any fitness level. “This isn’t about being the fastest or strongest,” the event description reads. “It’s about showing up, doing something hard, and remembering why it matters.”
