Chillicothe — The mid-year estimated city budget, required by the state, is at about $27M – typical for Chillicothe.

City Auditor Krystal Spetnagel reported that to Chillicothe Council on Monday evening, and then council had their first reading of it, on June 8th, 2026.

The State of Ohio requires that municipalities report a “tax budget” at the midpoint of the year. Here, that allows the Ross County Commissioners to know how to apportion their annual budget.

Of course, it is six months before all the year’s numbers are known…and so it is a best-guess.

Spetnagel said the $27M estimate for spending in the 2027 general fund is a little lower than this year because much capital will have been spent in 2026: state-funded work in Yoctangee Park, and getting the “Pepsi Building” completed for city services.

So, the balanced estimated budget is actually comprable to recent years.

Spetnagel said, to learn more, you can find the tax budget on the auditor’s website, or you can contact her office. Hard copies will also be available there, in the basement of 35 South Paint Street.

Spetnagel briefly explains the mid-year estimate.
