BERNE TOWNSHIP — A 36-year-old Lancaster man has died following a single-vehicle crash in southern Fairfield County early Wednesday morning.
According to the Lancaster Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 2:43 a.m. on Horns Mill Road in Berne Township.
Investigators said Ian James McCoy was driving a 2013 Fiat 500 northbound when he failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway. The vehicle traveled off the left side of the road, struck an embankment, and overturned. McCoy was ejected from the vehicle during the crash.
Emergency crews transported McCoy to Fairfield Medical Center before he was later transferred to Ohio State University Medical Center. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Troopers reported that McCoy was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Alcohol is also believed to have been a contributing factor, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The Berne Township Fire Department, Berne Township EMS, and Lancaster Fire and EMS assisted at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
