During Tuesdays Strategic Planning meeting, Hope House of Pickaway County addressed the City Council regarding the urgent need for a permanent shelter for homeless men in the community. They provided a comprehensive overview of the organization’s history, challenges, and proposed solutions.

Hope House, established in 2018, emerged from a collaborative effort among local churches to address homelessness in the city and county. Initially focusing on homeless men who were not military veterans, the organization faced numerous hurdles, including zoning restrictions and limited available spaces for shelters.

The organization outlined Hope House’s journey from its inception, including its temporary location at a local church and subsequent relocation due to property sale. Despite challenges, the organization has persevered, currently accommodating up to 10 men per night at their temporary facility.

The primary concern voiced by the group was the lack of suitable zoning for a permanent shelter. They highlighted the organization’s efforts to explore various options, including potential city-owned properties. One such property under consideration is a vacant lot behind Snap Fitness on Morris Avenue, which would require rezoning to accommodate the shelter.

They emphasized the importance of community input and support in determining the shelter’s location. They acknowledged the city’s efforts in providing temporary solutions but stressed the need for a permanent, stable facility to address the growing issue of homelessness in Pickaway County.

Council members engaged in a discussion with the Shelter, exploring potential locations, zoning regulations, and facility requirements. Questions were raised regarding the capacity of the proposed shelter, transportation arrangements, and the organization’s future plans.

While no final decisions were made during the meeting, the dialogue between Hope House representatives and city officials underscored the shared commitment to finding a sustainable solution to homelessness in the community.

The City Council expressed gratitude to Hope House for their dedication to addressing this critical issue. Further discussions and collaborations are expected as both parties work towards securing a permanent location for the shelter.
