SWANTON, Ohio — The Ohio Air National Guard’s 180th Fighter Wing has emerged from an intensive six-day Combat Readiness Inspection (CRI) with a clear message: they remain one of the most lethal and responsive combat units in the world.

From April 20–26, 2026, approximately 1,000 Airmen were pushed to their limits in a high-stress, contested environment designed to simulate real-world warfare. The exercise tested the wing’s ability to generate rapid combat power and execute complex missions under extreme pressure.

A “Surprise” Within a Test

The week was defined by more than just scheduled drills. While already deep into the CRI, the wing was hit with a no-notice inspection from the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). Simultaneously, the unit successfully managed the real-world deployment of over 100 members to various exercises across the country.

“Our surprise visit from NORAD was a welcomed, though unplanned, addition to this week’s focus,” said Colonel Curtis Voltz, Commander of the 180FW. “When challenged, we respond with expertise and professionalism.”

Validating National Defense

The CRI is a core component of the Air Force Inspection Program, ensuring that units are not only technically equipped but mentally prepared for immediate deployment.

“The U.S. Air Force’s inspection philosophy is focused on real-world mission readiness,” explained Lt. Col. Diana Sluhan, Wing Inspector General. She noted that the goal is to foster a culture where being “mission-ready” means being “inspection-ready” at a moment’s notice.

Results and Community Impact

The final assessment provided a formal validation of the wing’s effectiveness. For the Swanton community and the nation, these ratings serve as a guarantee that taxpayer investments are yielding a superior rapid-response capability.

“The results validate we stand ready to provide superior combat capability in support of our National Defense Strategy,” Col. Voltz said, praising his team for their tenacity through long days and nights. “Our Airmen demonstrated a clear commitment to excellence… proving we remain ready to respond at a moment’s notice.”

The 180th Fighter Wing continues its primary mission: maintaining an unwavering advantage over adversaries while protecting both the local community and national security.
