World Heritage + Ross County’s Hopewell Culture National Historical Park

Ross County — Hopewell Culture National Historical Park is being affected by, and is contributing to, the recent World Heritage designation. They are getting more out-of-state and international visitors, but they are also reaching out to locals who are revisiting the main park and its other newer units.

Susan Knisley, Director of Interpretation at Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, presented at the Region 9 annual meeting of the Ohio Local History Alliance on April 6th. She explained the World Heritage inscription, and the Hopewell Culture and how the park interprets that people and their work.

Knisley said that far travellers have already done their homework on what to visit here, and that World Heritage tourism “will help elevate other stories.”

Knisley said that during World Heritage Week April 15 through June 23rd, a “special art exhibit” by students from around country will be at the Mound City headquarters. On April 28th, ranger-led tours on Saturday and Sunday will start. Then on Memorial Day weekend, tours on every day of week will start.
