Ross Veterans Affair Officer Attacked During Investigation

ROSS – A simple investigation and some weird antics led to a fight and a struggle from a man in Ross County

According to law enforcement on October 23, 2021, Deputy was dispatched to the south entrance to the Veteran Affairs Hospital on an officer in distress call from the Department of Veteran Affairs Office Police Department.

Dispatchers advised that V. A Police Officer was out at the south entrance to the grounds, yelling for help on the radio and then radio silence from the officer when their dispatch attempted contact with the officer.

Upon arrival, The Deputy located the Officer who appeared to have been in a struggle with someone picking up objects off the ground and placing them on the hood of his patrol car. The Deputy made contact with the Officer, who advised that he had been in contact with a suspicious male laying in the tree line close to the edge of the federal property. Officer made contact with the male and advised him that he was detained for a criminal investigation of trespassing on private property. Officer advised that at that time, the male, who was later identified as Justin L. Handshey grabbed him by the wrist and began fighting with him, and attempted to flee. The officer at that time took Mr. Handshey to the ground and fought with him to take him into custody.
