Unexpected Closure: Circleville Hardee’s Shuts Doors Following History of Health, Safety Struggles

CIRCLEVILLE, OH — The Hardee’s restaurant on West Main Street has unexpectedly closed its doors, marking the end of a turbulent few years for the fast-food location. While the store has previously been shuttered by local authorities, this latest closure appears to be a decision made by the company rather than a forced evacuation.

The sudden move comes after a long history of friction between the franchise and local regulatory agencies, including the Pickaway County Health Department and the Circleville Fire Department.

A History of Violations

The location’s most significant crisis occurred in June 2023, when the Circleville Fire Department and Health Department jointly forced the restaurant to close. At the time, inspectors documented a staggering list of nearly a dozen violations that officials warned could pose a serious risk to public health.

Past critical issues included:

  • Sanitation Concerns: The presence of live insects and rodent droppings throughout the facility.
  • Temperature Failures: Food not being held at proper cold or hot temperatures, a major factor in foodborne illness.
  • Maintenance Neglect: Reported issues ranging from leaking equipment to a lack of proper handwashing facilities for employees.

After nearly a year of being offline for “maintenance” and repairs, the restaurant was finally given the green light to reopen in March 2024 after passing rigorous follow-up inspections.

The Final Quiet Chapter

Since its 2024 reopening, the restaurant had maintained a relatively low profile. According to the Pickaway County Public Health online database, the facility had not faced any major “red flag” enforcement actions in the past year.

However, observers noted that the restaurant has not appeared in recent inspection logs for some time. Unlike the 2023 shutdown, which saw orange “closed” signs from the health department, this week’s closure lacked official government placards, suggesting a voluntary “winding down” of operations.

No Official Word

As of Wednesday afternoon, the company has not responded to inquiries regarding the reason for the closure or whether the shutdown is permanent.

The closure follows a broader national trend for the Hardee’s brand; earlier this year, a major franchisee, ARC Burger, shuttered dozens of locations across the Midwest following legal and financial disputes with corporate leadership. It remains unclear if the Circleville location was tied to those broader corporate shifts.
