FAIRFIELD COUNTY, OH — A 53-year-old Columbus man is behind bars after an undercover online child exploitation investigation led to his arrest at a local park, according to the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office.

Patrick N. Smith was taken into custody without incident on Wednesday, July 8, 2026. He has been booked into the Fairfield County Jail on a fourth-degree felony count of importuning.

The Undercover Operation

According to a press release issued by Sheriff Alex W. Lape, the arrest was the culmination of an operation targeting individuals seeking to exploit children online.

During the investigation, detectives posed as an underage female online. Authorities state that Smith engaged in a digital conversation that eventually became sexual in nature. Believing he was communicating with a juvenile, Smith allegedly arranged a meeting at Brooks Park in Millersport, Ohio, with the explicit purpose of engaging in sexual activity.

Sheriff’s officials emphasized that no actual children were involved or endangered during the sting operation.

The Arrest at Brooks Park

When Smith arrived at the predetermined meeting location on Wednesday, he was swarmed by law enforcement. The arrest was executed through a coordinated effort by multiple agencies, including:

  • Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office Detectives
  • Patrol Bureau
  • SWAT Team
  • Major Crimes Unit

The case is currently being turned over to the Fairfield County Prosecutor’s Office, which will review the details to determine if additional criminal charges will be filed against Smith.

Sheriff Responds: “Zero Tolerance”

Following the arrest, Sheriff Lape issued a stern warning to anyone targeting minors in the region, reaffirming his office’s commitment to aggressive internet safety enforcement.

“The Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office has zero tolerance for those who attempt to exploit children,” Sheriff Lape stated. “We will continue to aggressively investigate these crimes and hold offenders accountable. If you target children in our community, you can expect to be arrested.”

Sheriff Lape also extended his appreciation to the responding units, the county prosecutor’s office, and The Decoy Project for their teamwork and professionalism throughout the investigation.

The matter remains under active investigation. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
