PICKAWAY TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A New York man was hospitalized with suspected serious injuries early Friday morning following a two-vehicle rear-end collision on U.S. Route 23 in Pickaway County.
According to a traffic crash report from the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred at approximately 1:57 a.m. on August 21, 2026, on U.S. 23 South, just south of Tarlton Road.
Deputies reported that Anthony Derek Gillenwaters, 24, of Rochester, New York, was traveling southbound in the left-hand lane on a red Chongqing Huansong motorized bicycle/moped. Investigators noted that the vehicle was operating with no visible vehicle lighting in an unlit area of the highway.
A second vehicle, a black 2011 Ford Edge driven by Jerrod Collins, 33, of Chillicothe, was also traveling southbound in the left lane. Unable to see the unlit moped ahead in the darkness, Collins struck the rear of Gillenwaters’ vehicle.

First responders with Pickaway Township Fire arrived on the scene and transported Gillenwaters to Grant Medical Center for treatment of suspected serious injuries. Reports indicate Gillenwaters was totally ejected from the moped during the collision.
Collins was wearing a lap and shoulder seatbelt at the time of the impact and reported no apparent injuries.
Deputies closed the roadway for approximately 30 minutes while emergency crews cleared the scene and investigated. The moped sustained disabling damage and was towed from the area by Amnesty Towing.
