TAMPA, Fla. — Two American service members were killed in action and a third remains missing after U.S. and partner forces intercepted a wave of Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks in Jordan on Friday, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced.
The deadly engagement triggered an immediate, heavy military response, with American assets launching a fresh round of retaliatory airstrikes against Iranian forces late Saturday night.
Casualties Reported in Jordan
The fatal attacks occurred on Friday, July 17. In addition to the two service members killed and the one currently missing in action, four other American personnel sustained injuries severe enough to require medical evacuation to Jordanian hospitals. Officials confirmed those four service members have since been treated and discharged.
Additional personnel who were evaluated for minor injuries have already returned to active duty.
In accordance with Department of Defense policy, CENTCOM is withholding the identities of the fallen service members until 24 hours after next-of-kin notifications are complete.
U.S. Launches Eighth Night of Retaliatory Airstrikes
At the direction of the Commander-in-Chief, CENTCOM forces executed a new wave of targeted strikes on Saturday, July 18, at approximately 11:30 PM ET.
The operation marks the eighth consecutive night of U.S. military strikes in the region. According to military officials, the latest bombardment successfully struck several strategic assets, including:
- Iranian military coastal surveillance and air defense facilities
- Advanced maritime capabilities
- Key missile and drone storage sites
A primary objective of the Saturday night operation was targeting the specific Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) forces responsible for launching Friday’s fatal assault on the U.S. personnel in Jordan. Officials stated the ongoing campaign is designed to systematically degrade Iran’s offensive military capabilities.
High Alert in the Region
The deadly escalation comes as the U.S. maintains a massive operational footprint in the area. According to CENTCOM, there are currently more than 50,000 U.S. personnel deployed across the Middle East.
Military leadership emphasized that these forces remain highly vigilant, focused, and ready to respond to further aggression.
