CHILLICOTHE — The Ross Correctional Institution (RCI) is in mourning this week following the sudden death of a veteran staff member during his shift.
The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC) confirmed that Sergeant William “BC” Cokonougher passed away on Monday after experiencing a sudden medical emergency while on duty. Despite the efforts of those on-site, the veteran officer could not be revived.
A Decade of Dedicated Service
Sergeant Cokonougher was a familiar face at the Chillicothe facility, having served as a dedicated staff member since 2013. Over his 13-year career with the department, he became a respected leader among his peers and a vital part of the institution’s daily operations.
In a formal statement, the ODRC remembered him not only for his professional commitment but for his life outside the prison walls:
“He was a loving and dedicated father, husband, and staff member at Ross Correctional Institution… He will be missed by all who knew him.”
Community in Mourning
The news has sent shockwaves through the local corrections community. “Our hearts are with the Cokonougher family and staff at Ross Correctional Institution as they mourn the loss,” the department added.
Sergeant Cokonougher is survived by his wife and children. Funeral arrangements have not yet been publicly announced, but the ODRC is expected to provide honors for the fallen sergeant, recognizing his years of service to the State of Ohio.
Flags at the facility are expected to be flown at half-staff in honor of his memory.
