Subaru of America, Inc. has announced a recall for certain 2020-2022 Subaru Outback and Legacy vehicles due to potentially defective Occupant Detection System (ODS) sensors on the front passenger seat. The recall, which affects a total of 118,723 vehicles, was initiated after the discovery of a manufacturing issue that could pose safety risks to occupants.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall number 24V-227, Subaru has identified the possibility of a defect in the ODS Sensor Printed Circuit Board (PCB), which could lead to the formation of cracks in a capacitor. Over time, moisture may enter the capacitor, resulting in a short circuit. This defect could cause the SRS airbag system warning lamp to illuminate, the front passenger’s frontal airbag OFF indicator to illuminate, and the front passenger airbag to fail to deploy in certain crashes, increasing the risk of injury to occupants.

The affected vehicles include 2020-2022 Subaru Outback and Legacy models produced between June 16, 2020, and July 13, 2021, and June 16, 2020, and July 12, 2021, respectively. Subaru has received 253 warranty claims related to this issue but is not aware of any injuries resulting from the defect.

In response to the recall, Subaru dealers will replace all four ODS sensors on the front passenger seat with new ones. The replacement sensors were assembled with a PCB manufactured by the original sub-supplier. Dealer notification is expected to occur on March 27, 2024, with owner notification to follow within 60 days. Once sufficient remedy parts are available, a final owner notification letter will be mailed to customers.

Subaru of America, Inc. has assured customers that it is committed to addressing the issue promptly and ensuring the safety of affected vehicles. Owners with questions or concerns about the recall are encouraged to contact Subaru customer service at 844-373-6614 for assistance.
