Local students earn scholarships at University of Findlay
Two local students recently were awarded endowed scholarships for the 2015-16 academic year at the University of Findlay.
Hannah Chipps of Orient was awarded the Michael and Sara Dolmayer Western Equestrian Scholarship.
Sarah Chipps of Orient was awarded the Ferguson Farm Scholarship.
Ashville student participates in University of Findlay research forum
Scott Stevens of Ashville recently participated in the University of Findlay’s Physical Therapy Research Forum held Feb. 25. More than 60 students participated in poster and platform presentations at the forum, which promotes clinical research among students, faculty and community to foster and support evidence-based practice.
Dowden wins award at Miami University
Aspen Dowden of Circleville recently was recognized by Miami University’s Paper Science & Engineering Foundation for winning the ABB Award.
The Paper Science & Engineering Foundation was founded in 1960 through the generous donations of several local paper mills and corporations who wanted to ensure the education of future paper engineers.
Miami is one of very few schools in the country to offer paper science curricula, and the program boasts 100 percent placement for graduates.
Dowden is earning a bachelor of science degree majoring in chemical engineering.
The spring awards banquet was held April 12 at Miami’s Oxford campus.
Local student featured in Ashland University art exhibition
Kaylin Henry of Circleville, a senior at Ashland University, presented her capstone art piece at the 2016 Senior Art Exhibition held April 7 to May 14 at the Coburn Art Gallery on AU’s campus.
Henry was awarded honorable mention for her senior art exhibition held during the opening reception on April 7. The award was presented by Daniel McDonald, chair of the art department.
The fine art pieces for Henry revolve around previous toxic people in her life because of their prejudicial commentary, it resulted in questioning or doubting one’s being and ego.
In a way to counter the criticisms of others that affected the perception of herself, Henry uses self-remedy to assist in the transition toward self-acceptance by making herself the prime focus of the image. Henry’s graphic design style is polished, modern and mechanical aesthetic to communicate an idea or brand creatively in a professional setting that will resonate with her clients and viewers. Geometric shapes and patterns are often composed to convey cohesion, solidity and vitality within her designs to give each of the pieces their own presence since these elements also reflect the designer’s personality.
The exhibition features the capstone pieces of all graduating art majors.
“While the 2016 Senior Art Exhibition provides the capstone experience for graduating art majors, it represents more than just students’ studio art experiences,” said Cynthia Petry, director of the Coburn Gallery. “For these students of the liberal arts, the exhibition is the culmination of their undergraduate careers at Ashland University.”
Henry will graduate with a bachelor of science degree in commercial art-graphic design and minor in art history. She is the daughter of Donnie Henry and Angela Dailey and is originally from Wellston, where she graduated from Wellston High School.
While attending AU, she achieved several awards such as the 2015 Design Award and the 2016 Design and Digital Award for the Juried Student Art Exhibitions, and she also was a nominee for the AICUO Award for Excellence in the Visual Arts in 2016. She participated as the co-president of Art club from the Spring of 2015 until the Spring of 2016.
Upon graduation, Henry plans to reside in northeastern Ohio and have a career as a graphic designer, freelancer or obtain a position in an art gallery.
Locals earn scholar-athlete awards
A total of 143 Heidelberg University student-athletes were honored earlier this semester not for their play on the field but for their achievements in the classroom.
Among the students receiving a Landess Scholar-Athlete Award were Colin Graves of Ashville, a senior Sport Management and Business Administration major (football), and Travis Hedge of Ashville, a junior Computer Science major (football).
The Landess Awards were created by William Landess, a 1995 Heidelberg alumnus and member of the university’s Board of Trustees, to honor student-athletes who achieve a minimum 3.0 GPA during their semester of competition.
Craig joins sorority, geology club at Ashland University
Cassandra Craig of Orient is a member of the Alpha Phi sorority and the Geology Club at Ashland University.
Craig, daughter of Jeffery and Melissa Craig of Orient, is majoring in biology. She is a 2012 graduate of Central Crossing High School.
The Epsilon Alpha Chapter of the Alpha Phi sorority is dedicated to improving and embodying their six core values: character development, scholarship, service, loyalty, leadership, and sisterhood. Alpha Phi prides itself in fundraising for the Alpha Phi Foundation and raising awareness for cardiac care. Their philanthropy programs and events include the Pre Red Dress Social, The Annual Red Dress Gala, Cardiac Care Week, Hoops for Heart and Mr. University.
The purpose of the Geology Club is to explore areas of geology and/or earth science that cannot be studied in the classroom or lab. Professors involved with the club encouraged students to actively engage in research that will give them experience with real-world scientific investigation. Activities include field trips to areas of geological interest and lectures on occupations in geology and related fields. Membership is open to all interested students.
Viassy honored at awards banquet
Youngstown State University student Juliette Viassy of New Holland was recognized at this year’s Student Awards Banquet for completing the Emerging Leaders Program, designed to strengthen leadership knowledge and skills.
Viassy is a communication studies major at YSU.
Students graduate from Ashland University
The following students completed their Ashland University degree requirements following the spring 2016 semester:
Megan Zealer of Circleville will receive a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree during Ashland University’s spring commencement ceremonies on May 14. Zealer is majoring in Nursing. She is the daughter of Kit and Tracy Zealer of Circleville and a 2011 graduate of Teays Valley High School.
Cassandra Craig of Orient will receive a Bachelor of Science degree during Ashland University’s spring commencement ceremonies on May 14. Craig is majoring in Biology and Environmental Science. She is the daughter of Jeffery and Melissa Craig of Orient and a 2012 graduate of Central Crossing High School.

Locals earn dean’s list honors at Marietta College
More than 110 Marietta College students were named to the spring 2016 dean’s list, which features any full-time student completing at least 15 credit hours with a grade point average between 3.5 and 3.74.
Local students are Alex Bower of Circleville, a graduate of Logan Elm High School, majoring in Sports Management; and Patrick Ford of Circleville, a graduate of WV Fisher Catholic High School, majoring in Environmental Science.
