CHILLICOTHE, OH – Finding help during a mental health crisis is about to get easier for residents across South Central Ohio. The Paint Valley Alcohol, Drug Addiction, and Mental Health (ADAMH) Board has announced a new initiative to place 988 Lifeline signage in local parks, preserves, and pharmacies thanks to a recent state grant.

The project is funded by the 988 Lifeline Awareness Grant, awarded through the Ohio Association of County Behavioral Health Authorities (OACHBA) and the Ohio Department of Behavioral Health and Addiction Services.

Bringing Help to the Great Outdoors

The ADAMH Board is partnering with eight different park districts and municipalities to reach people where they often go to decompress: nature. Large signage will be installed in common areas and along trails, informing visitors that they can call, text, or chat with 988 crisis staff 24/7.

The initiative spans a five-county service area with a population of over 234,000 residents.

“Spending time in nature can be a powerful way to cope with difficult emotions,” said Melanie Swisher, Executive Director of the Paint Valley ADAMH Board. “By partnering with our local parks… we’re making sure people know they’re not alone and that 988 is there when they need someone to talk to.”

Creative Outreach via Local Pharmacies

In addition to the park signage, the board is utilizing the grant to place 988 advertisements directly on pharmacy medication bags. This strategy aims to put life-saving information directly into the hands of residents as they manage their healthcare needs.

A Multi-Community Effort

The ADAMH Board extended its gratitude to the following partners for their cooperation in the roll-out:

  • Arc of Appalachia
  • Ross County Parks District
  • Pickaway County Parks District
  • Cities of Jeffersonville and Washington Court House
  • Villages of Bloomingburg, Greenfield, and Octa
