CIRCLEVILLE, OH — The Pickaway County Common Pleas Court opened its doors to the next generation of leadership yesterday, as Judge Matthew Chafin hosted sixth-grade students from Circleville Middle School for an immersive, educational courthouse tour.
The field trip was designed to strip away the mystery of legal proceedings, offering students an intimate look at how the local justice system operates before concluding with a rare glimpse into regional history.
Step onto the Bench: Mock Roles and Legal Realities
Rather than just listening to a lecture, the middle schoolers actively stepped into the shoes of real-world legal professionals. Judge Chafin selected students to roleplay crucial courtroom positions, including defense attorneys, prosecuting attorneys, and the judge’s bailiff.
Other classmates took turns sitting directly on the Judge’s bench, occupying the witness stand, and filling the jury box.
While students occupied these roles, Judge Chafin walked them through the heavy responsibilities handled by the Common Pleas Court daily. He explained the legal mechanics behind how the county navigates complex adult civil disagreements, domestic disputes, and high-stakes criminal felonies.
“It is always a privilege to welcome the students into the courtroom,” Judge Chafin stated in a release. “I enjoyed providing them with a better hands-on understanding of the justice system, sharing some local history by touring the Courthouse bell tower, and encouraging them to participate in the future of their community.”
A Historic Finale
To tie the civic lesson back to the community’s roots, the educational tour wrapped up with a unique walk through the historic Pickaway County Courthouse bell tower, letting students experience a landmark piece of Circleville’s architectural history.
Court officials noted that experiential field trips like this help demystify the legal process for young learners, encouraging civic responsibility and a foundational understanding of government branches long before they reach voting age.
