US – President Trump is returning to Facebook after a 2 year ban from Facebook

According to a press release from Meta, (Facebook), “we will be ending the suspension of Mr. Trumps Facebook and Instagram accounts in the coming weeks.”

Meta said in the release that, “social media it rooted in the belief that open debate and free flow of ideas are important values. we don’t want to get in the way of open, public and democratic debate on Meta’s platforms. The public should be able to hear what their politicians are saying — the good, the bad and the ugly — so that they can make informed choices at the ballot box.”

Meta said that the ban on then-President Trump was an “extreme and highly unusual circumstance.”

Meta banned Trump indefinitely following the violence at Capitol city on January 6, 2021. The suspension went in front of the board and eventually a decision on the open ended suspension was made for 2 years imposed on Jan 7, 2021, but have yet to lift the ban.

Meta said going forward they have new guardrails in place to deter repeat offenders.

“There is a significant debate about how social media companies should approach content posted on their platforms. Many people believe that companies like Meta should remove much more content than we currently do. Others argue that our current policies already make us overbearing censors. The fact is people will always say all kinds of things on the internet.”

Meta said that they know that the decision to Ban and to Un-Ban Trump has been fiercely criticized. Meta says a decision had to be made so they tried the best that they could to be consistent with, ” our values and the process we established in response to the Oversight Board’s guidance.”
