HOCKING TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A 33-year-old man has been arrested and charged with aggravated vehicular homicide following a wrong-way crash on U.S. Route 33 that killed a 23-year-old man Sunday evening in Fairfield County.
According to records, Alvaro Uribe Gonzalez, 33, was taken into custody following the crash and was found to be operating a vehicle while impaired. Authorities also determined that Gonzalez was operating the vehicle without a valid driver’s license.
The crash occurred at approximately 6:15 p.m. near the U.S. Route 22 interchange near Lancaster.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s preliminary investigation, Gonzalez was driving a 2016 GMC Terrain eastbound on U.S. Route 33 when the vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway. Gonzalez then overcorrected, causing the SUV to cross the roadway, overturn and enter the westbound lanes.
The GMC Terrain struck a westbound 2025 Chevrolet Trax before catching fire.
The driver of the Chevrolet Trax, identified as 23-year-old Cameron M. Lyon, was treated at the scene and transported by Hocking Township EMS to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
A passenger in Lyon’s vehicle was transported by Berne Township EMS to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Gonzalez was also transported to a nearby hospital following the crash for treatment of minor injuries.
According to Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office records, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been contacted regarding Gonzalez. The records indicate that immigration authorities were notified, but the records reviewed do not independently establish Gonzalez’s immigration or citizenship status.
Gonzalez is facing a charge of aggravated vehicular homicide and is being held without bond, according to jail records.
Alcohol impairment was initially suspected as a factor in the crash. The investigation into the collision remains ongoing.
