As a new school year begins in Pickaway County, drivers need to be aware that this is a perfect time to make traffic safety a priority. With students walking to school, or having school buses on our roadways again, drivers need to remember the importance of safety in and around school zones. Ohio Law makes sure that school buses and school zones are protected by these laws, but drivers need to take the responsibility to stay within crosswalks when crossing the street, and to be aware that it takes several feet for a motor vehicle to stop. Young drivers should also make sure they keep safety an important part of their school day, and remember to “Put Down The Phone” when behind the wheel of a motor vehicle.

“Safe Communities of Pickaway County will again work with our local schools to make sure we do all we can to assist them in keeping this school year safe when it comes to traffic safety”, stated Teresa C. Carper, Director for Safe Communities of Pickaway County. “Each year we do all we can to keep these traffic safety messages in the forefront of our program for teens and new drivers.”

Students should remember to “Buckle Up Every Trip Every Time”, and to keep in mind that to “Stay Alive” you should keep the rule of “Don’t Text and Drive”.

Safe Communities of Pickaway County wishes all students and staff a safe 2014-2015 school year. They also recommend that all students and their parents visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website at www.nhtsa.gov for suggestions on ways to keep safe when behind the wheel of a motor vehicle.
