“Watch Out for Motorcycles” this Labor Day Weekend is an important reminder to motorists in Pickaway County due to a large motorcycle event near our community. Pickaway County will probably see more motorcycles on our roadways, and everyone should realize that we need to “Share The Road” for safety. Making sure that no one drives impaired is a great start to a safe holiday. The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” National Crackdown on impaired driving continues through Labor Day, and more law enforcement patrols will be out to ensure the best possible safety for our motorists.

“Labor Day can be a great end to the Summer season, however with extra motorcycles and other motor vehicles on our roadways it is important to keep the focus on the road and be aware of speed limits while traveling through Pickaway County”, stated Safe Communities Director Teresa C. Carper. “Please remember that if you plan to celebrate with alcohol that ‘Friends Don’t Let Friends Drive Drunk’, and plan ahead for a safe Labor Day weekend.”

Motorcyclist should be especially careful and not drive impaired. In 2012, one in four motorcyclists involved in a fatal crash were legally drunk. Furthermore, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that there were 4,957 motorcycle fatalities in 2012, which made up 15 percent of the total traffic fatalities for that year.

As the summer season comes to an end, and we plan to celebrate Labor Day with family and friends, please keep safety a part of those plans. Safe Communities of Pickaway County notes that motorists should visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website at www.nhtsa.gov to get tips on keeping safe behind the wheel this Labor Day and everyday throughout the year.
