CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio — A Pickaway County jury has found an Ashville man guilty of assault but not guilty of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the 2024 death of Stacey Garman.

James Tackett, 52, was originally charged with murder, voluntary manslaughter, and assault following a September 10, 2024, altercation outside a residence on Long Street in Ashville that resulted in the death of 54-year-old Stacey Garman.

During the investigation, witnesses told dispatchers that Tackett punched Garman during an argument, causing him to fall and strike the ground. Garman lost consciousness and was transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Authorities also alleged that Tackett initially told investigators that Garman had tripped and fallen before later changing his account during the investigation.

The case generated significant public attention in Ashville, with family members and residents questioning the length of time it took for charges to be filed. Ashville police previously stated that the delay was necessary to ensure a thorough investigation and noted that assistance was provided by both the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office and the Pickaway County Prosecutor’s Office.

Following a plea deal this week with the state and defense, in Pickaway County Common Pleas Court, found Tackett guilty of assault but, dismissed the charge of involuntary manslaughter.

A pre-sentence investigation (PSI) has been ordered by the court. Tackett remains free on bond, with GPS monitoring continuing under the conditions previously imposed by the court.

Sentencing has been scheduled for July 22, 2026.

The assault conviction carries potential penalties that will be determined by the court at the upcoming sentencing hearing.
