PICKAWAY COUNTY, Ohio — New affordable housing opportunities are on the horizon for Pickaway County families following a major state funding announcement.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Ohio Department of Development Director Lydia Mihalik have announced $26.9 million in grants through the latest round of the Welcome Home Ohio Program. The initiative, which targets housing shortages across 57 counties, includes a significant regional boost that directly benefits Pickaway County residents.

Local Impact: Funding Secured for Regional Housing

As part of the May 2026 funding wave, Habitat for Humanity of Southeast Ohio has been awarded a $400,000 grant for property acquisition and an additional $600,000 grant for housing rehabilitation and new construction.

While the organization spans a multi-county footprint—including Athens, Fairfield, Ross, and Pickaway counties—the total $1 million investment will directly support the purchase, construction, or complete rehabilitation of nine homes across the region, providing vital, safe housing solutions for local families.

Revitalizing Ohio Neighborhoods

The Welcome Home Ohio program is designed to jumpstart local housing markets by providing land banks, non-profit developers, and local government entities with the capital needed to buy foreclosed properties, build new homes, or fix up existing structures.

“Every property restored through Welcome Home Ohio represents exciting new potential for a neighborhood, and the people who call it home,” Director Mihalik said in a statement. “These investments are helping our local partners create housing solutions that meet today’s needs while preparing for tomorrow’s growth.”

Since its launch, the program has driven nearly $86 million into Ohio communities, supporting the creation of 727 homes across 63 counties.

Additional Financial Incentives Available

Beyond direct grant funding, the state is rolling out major tax incentives to keep the momentum going:

  • $20 Million in Tax Credits: Non-refundable tax credits are available through the state’s biennium for qualifying housing rehabilitation and new construction projects once a property is sold.
  • Rolling Applications: The Ohio Department of Development is currently accepting tax credit applications on a rolling basis until all funds are fully exhausted.
