Chillicothe Police Blotter: Firearm Stolen from Vehicle and Campus Assault Investigation

CHILLICOTHE, OH — The Chillicothe Police Department had a high-volume Monday, responding to 17 significant incidents on April 20, 2026. Highlighting the day’s activity were a theft of a firearm, an assault that moved from the local university campus to the public library, and multiple trespass complaints at local businesses.


Major Investigations

  • Firearm Theft on East 7th Street: At approximately 1:00 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 300 block of East 7th Street regarding a vehicle break-in. The victim reported that a firearm had been stolen from the vehicle. Police are currently investigating the theft and vehicle trespass.
  • Campus Disturbance and Assault: Early Monday morning at 4:03 a.m., units were sent to the Ohio University Chillicothe Campus for a disturbance. While in route, officers were redirected to the Ross County Public Library on South Paint Street, where the parties involved had relocated. Investigators determined the original incident involved an assault; the case remains pending.
  • Bad Checks Complaint: Bridgeport Equipment contacted authorities at 1:37 p.m. to report a complaint regarding “passing bad checks.” An investigation has been launched into the matter.

Arrests and Warrants

  • Probation Violation: Officers responded to a verbal domestic dispute on Jefferson Avenue at 8:53 a.m. While no physical altercation occurred, one of the parties, Caylin Brooks, was found to be on probation. At the request of the Ross County Adult Probation Department, Brooks was arrested for a probation violation and transported to jail.
  • Sherman Park Encounters: Police made two separate trips to Sherman Park late Monday evening. At 9:25 p.m., units conducted a warrant check, followed by another call at 10:01 p.m. resulting in a report for Obstructing Official Business and warrant service.
  • Drug Paraphernalia: During a patrol in the area of Douglas and Adams, an officer recognized a female with an active warrant. During the contact, an investigation into the illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia was initiated.

Business and Public Disturbances

The afternoon and evening saw a surge in “disorderly” and “trespass” calls:

  • Walmart (River Trace Ln): A former employee was officially trespassed from the premises at 4:55 p.m.
  • Crosskeys Tavern: Police were called to the East Main Street establishment at 5:42 p.m. regarding a male subject who was refusing to leave the premises.
  • High Street Church of Christ: A disorderly conduct complaint was filed at 7:58 p.m. at the church located on North High Street.

Traffic Enforcement

Two drivers were cited during afternoon patrols for licensing violations:

  • Shawn Ramsey was cited for Driving Under Suspension (DUS) on East Main Street.
  • Brian Chandler was cited on North Hickory Street for No Operator’s License after it was discovered he only possessed a state ID card. Both individuals are scheduled to appear in Chillicothe Municipal Court on May 1.
