REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio — The Ohio Fire Academy (OFA) is launching a major recruitment and training initiative to bolster the ranks of rural emergency response teams across the state. Recognizing that volunteer firefighters are the “backbone” of rural Ohio’s safety net, the OFA is offering an intensive Volunteer Firefighter Course this August at no cost to participants.
The program is designed to lower the barriers to entry for those looking to serve their neighbors, providing all essential training materials and lodging for free.
Filling a Critical Need
In many of Ohio’s rural townships, fire protection and emergency medical services depend almost entirely on volunteers. However, departments statewide have faced recruitment challenges in recent years. This 36-hour awareness-level course is designed to meet all requirements set by the Ohio Administrative Code (O.A.C.), providing a fast-track for new members to gain certification.

What the Training Includes
The course is structured as a high-intensity, fast-paced program held over two consecutive weekends to accommodate those with full-time jobs.
Core Training Topics:
- Life-Saving Tactics: Forcible entry, ventilation, and ladder operations.
- Equipment Mastery: Proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and ropes.
- Fire Suppression: Hose handling and strategic water movement.
Course Dates:
- Weekend 1: August 14–16, 2026
- Weekend 2: August 21–23, 2026 (Note: Perfect attendance is required for final certification.)
Zero-Cost Commitment
To support local departments and their recruits, the OFA has removed the financial burden of training. Tuition, course materials, meals, and dormitory lodging are all provided for free.
Participants are only required to provide their own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), typically coordinated through their local sponsoring fire department.
How to Register
The Ohio Fire Academy encourages anyone who has considered answering the call to service to register immediately, as slots for free training sessions often fill quickly.
