LANCASTER, OH — The Lancaster Fire Department has released its preliminary findings regarding the devastating duplex fire at 655 ½ E. Fifth Ave. that claimed three lives in the early morning hours of April 1.

Following an exhaustive joint investigation involving the Lancaster Police, the Fairfield County Coroner, and the State of Ohio Fire Marshal, officials have ruled the cause of the blaze as undetermined, though the evidence strongly points to a tragic accident.

A Deadly Timeline

Investigators believe the fire began approximately one hour before the first 911 call was placed. The blaze originated on the ground floor in an outdoor area directly beneath the building’s landing.

Several environmental factors created a “perfect storm” for the rapid spread of the flames:

  • High Winds: Sustained winds and heavy gusts from the southwest acted as a bellows for the fire.
  • Accelerants: Nearby combustible materials and two parked vehicles provided immediate fuel.
  • Trapped Occupants: Because the fire began near the building’s landing, it effectively blocked the primary exit points for both units in the duplex, leaving the victims with no clear path to safety.

While Lancaster Police officers and neighbors were able to rescue two people before fire crews arrived, three others were unable to escape the fast-moving inferno.

Investigation Challenges

Due to the “extreme level of fire destruction,” investigators noted that the exact ignition source—what first sparked the flame—cannot be definitively identified. However, the department was clear in its conclusion that the fire was not intentional.

“While the investigation remains ongoing, we have gathered enough information to support the conclusion that the cause was accidental,” the department stated in a formal release.

A Call to the Community

In the wake of the tragedy, the Lancaster Fire Department is urging residents to perform an immediate safety audit of their own homes.

“We encourage every member of our community to test their alarms today,” the department said, extending deepest condolences to the families of the victims. To prevent future loss of life, the LFD and the U.S. Fire Administration recommend three vital steps:

  1. Functional Smoke Alarms: Ensure they are installed on every level and near every sleeping area.
  2. Two Ways Out: Every room in a home should have two planned escape routes.
  3. Clear Pathways: Keep all exits and stairwells free of debris or combustible materials that could fuel a fire or block an escape.

The Lancaster community continues to mourn the loss of the three victims as the final details of the investigation are processed.
