Target recalls ‘Up & Up’ baby wipes nationwide over life-threatening bacterial contamination risk

MINNEAPOLIS — Target has launched a massive, nationwide voluntary recall of its popular store-brand “Up & Up” baby wipes following federal testing that uncovered dangerous, potentially life-threatening bacterial contamination.

According to an official safety alert published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), product samples tested positive for Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioli. The retail giant initiated the recall after receiving numerous customer complaints regarding product discoloration and adverse health symptoms.

Severe Health Risks to Infants and Newborns

Health officials warn that exposure to these specific strains of bacteria can cause severe, opportunistic infections. Because baby wipes are primarily used on newborns, infants, and toddlers with immature immune systems, this demographic faces the highest risk.

While healthy adults might only develop localized skin infections if the product touches minor cuts or scrapes, the risk is drastically higher for vulnerable individuals. In infants and immunocompromised people, the bacteria can easily transition into the bloodstream, potentially triggering life-threatening complications such as sepsis or pneumonia.

Affected Products and UPC Codes

The recall impacts both Fragrance-Free and Fresh Cucumber Scented varieties manufactured by supplier Sapro Temizlik Urunleri. The wipes were sold individually, in multi-packs, and in large bulk boxes at Target stores nationwide and online at Target.com.
