SCIOTO TOWNSHIP, OH — Six people were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries Thursday evening following a five-vehicle, chain-reaction crash on U.S. 50 in Ross County.
Troopers from the Chillicothe Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to the scene near milepost 20 after receiving reports of the multi-vehicle collision around 5:32 p.m. on October 8.
According to investigators, 18-year-old Melissa Maxwell of Chillicothe was driving a 2014 Ford F-150 southeast on U.S. 50 when her vehicle rear-ended a 2000 Dodge Durango that was stopped in traffic. The Durango was driven by Bobbi Wellman, 43, of Greenfield.
The initial impact triggered a chain reaction that swept into three additional stopped vehicles:
- A 2008 Ford F-150 driven by a juvenile from Chillicothe
- A 2011 Honda Odyssey driven by Zachary Thompson, 34, of Chillicothe
- A 2008 Ford Taurus driven by a juvenile from Chillicothe
First responders transported Maxwell, Wellman, the juvenile driver of the Ford Taurus, and three passengers to Adena Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.

The crash forced authorities to shut down U.S. 50 for approximately 20 minutes while emergency crews cleared the roadway.
Multiple agencies assisted state troopers at the scene, including Scioto Township Fire and EMS, Union Township Fire and EMS, Green Township EMS, VA Fire and EMS, and the Ross County Sheriff’s Office.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed the crash remains under investigation.
