Chillicothe, Ohio (February 12, 2024): On February 11th, a concerned off-duty First Responder named Courtland Hastings discovered an unconscious man, Christopher Coates, slumped over the wheel of a car at a stop sign in Ross County. Fearing Mr. Coates had overdosed, shattered the vehicle’s rear window to gain access and remove him. First responders arrived shortly after and administered Narcan, reviving Mr. Coates.

Police investigation revealed Mr. Coates was under the influence of fentanyl while behind the wheel, though the car was parked with the engine running. He admitted to using the drug and was transported to Adena Regional Medical Center for further evaluation.

Due to the circumstances, Mr. Coates was issued a citation for having physical control of a vehicle while under the influence. He is scheduled to appear in Chillicothe Municipal Court on February 12th. Additionally, Mr. Coates refused to provide a urine sample, resulting in a separate charge.
