The Ross County Historical Society, in conjunction with the Mound City Chapter of the Archaeological Society of Ohio (ASO) and Hopewell Culture National Historic Park, will host its sixth annual Archaeology Day event on Saturday, April 15, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The title of this year’s
event is “Rocks, Fossils, and Prehistoric Artifacts.” Featured will be more than 20 table-top exhibits with a wide range of prehistoric artifacts, fossils, and rocks collected by members of the Mound City Chapter of the ASO. Many items from the Historical Society’s collections which are not currently on exhibit will also be displayed — including mammoth and mastodon teeth, geodes, fossils, rocks, minerals, and a variety of locally found prehistoric artifacts.
Need help identifying items that you have found? Be sure to bring them along and talk with experts such as archaeologist JEB Bowen and others who will gladly help you learn more about whatever items you have.
The event will take place at the Ross County Heritage Center located at 45 West 5th Street, Chillicothe. Admission is free and open to the public and includes tours of the Ross County Historical Society’s permanent prehistoric cultures exhibit. For additional information, please call (740) 772-1936.
