ROSS COUNTY, OH — A major boost is on the way for outdoor recreation and transportation in Ross County, thanks to a newly announced state grant. As part of a nearly $52 million investment in active transportation across Ohio, Governor Mike DeWine and the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) have awarded $1,546,400 to the Ross County Park District for Phase 2 rehabilitation of the Paint Creek Recreational Trail (PCRT).

The project will repair and improve a 3.8-mile segment of the trail stretching from the Village of Frankfort through Concord and Union Townships, ending just past the Musselman Station Road cul-de-sac. The upgrade will enhance access, safety, and usability for walkers, cyclists, and other trail users along this key regional pathway.

Governor DeWine emphasized the broader impact of the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP), which funds the initiative:

“The Transportation Alternatives Program makes vital investments to support safer, more connected spaces for walking and biking. These improvements enhance public safety, foster healthier lifestyles, and strengthen communities.”

Ross County’s project is one of 44 projects in 33 counties selected for funding through TAP, a competitive statewide program focused on expanding infrastructure for non-motorized transportation. Criteria for selection included safety, connectivity, and implementation readiness — all factors the Paint Creek trail met with distinction.

ODOT Director Pamela Boratyn added:

“Biking and walking are more than just recreation — they support local economies and community well-being. We’re proud to help Ross County and other communities create sustainable, connected transportation options.”

With trail usage growing in rural and urban communities alike, the investment is expected to improve not only outdoor access, but also economic development and community wellness in Ross County. Construction is expected to begin soon after design and bidding processes are completed.

About the Trail

The Paint Creek Recreational Trail is a popular multi-use path that follows a former railroad corridor, offering scenic views and a valuable link between communities. The rehabilitation work will address surface repairs and improve safety features, ensuring the trail remains a cornerstone of Ross County’s park and recreation system.
