Investigators survey the scene on the CSX tracks where a pedestrian was killed Friday.

CIRCLEVILLE – A man was killed Friday afternoon after being struck by a train on the CSX tracks on the west side of U.S. Route 23 between U.S. Route 22 and the Apple House bridge.

The 38-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. John Ellis, Pickaway County Coroner.

His name has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin, according to Sheriff Robert Radcliff.

Radcliff said dispatchers received a call about 3:40 p.m. Friday from CSX railroad personnel reporting a pedestrian had been struck on the tracks.

When investigators arrived on the scene, they searched the area and discovered the body near CSX mile marker 71, about 200 yards south of the Route 22 bridge.

According to reports from the train conductor, the victim was seated on the outside rail of the southbound tracks and appeared to be listening to his cell phone. The conductor sounded the train’s horn repeatedly, but the victim never moved off the tracks.

Members of the Pickaway Township and Tarlton fire departments assisted with the extrication of the victim at the scene.

An autopsy has been ordered by Dr. Ellis, and the incident remains under investigation by the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office.
