The force of the impact at U.S. Route 23 and state Route 762 forced this Ford Ranger into the corner of the home on the southwest corner of the intersection.

CIRCLEVILLE – An Orient man has died the day after a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Route 23 at state Route 762.

Lester G. Smith, 78, of Orient, passed away Friday at Grant Medical Center in Columbus, according to the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office.

While the crash remains under investigation, preliminary reports indicate Smith was traveling northbound on Route 23 and attempted to make a left turn onto Route 762.

The turn brought his white SUV into the path of a southbound Ford Ranger driven by Daniel Howard, 23, of Bloomingburg.

The impact forced Howard’s vehicle off the roadway and into the side of the home on the southwest corner of the intersection.

Deputies reported both drivers were unresponsive at the scene and both were transported to Grant Medical Center by Harrison Township and Scioto Township EMS.

Howard was listed in stable condition Friday evening, according to the sheriff’s office.

No one was injured inside the house, and the county building inspector cleared it as structurally sound.

South Bloomfield and Commercial Point Police also assisted at the scene of the crash, which occurred shortly before 1 p.m. Thursday.
