COLUMBUS – The Ohio House Public Health Policy Committee held its first hearing today on House Bill 633, the Early Detection and Awareness of Type 1 Diabetes Act. The bill, introduced by State Rep. Thomas Hall (R-Madison Twp.) and co-sponsored by State Rep. Joe Miller (D-Amherst), seeks to increase awareness and improve early detection of Type 1 Diabetes in Ohio.
The bipartisan legislation mandates the Ohio Department of Health to create and distribute informational materials on Type 1 Diabetes. These materials would be made available to every school district, county office of education, and charter school across the state via the department’s website. The bill requires that this information be provided to parents or guardians of students when they enroll in elementary school.
Rep. Hall emphasized the importance of providing clear resources for families affected by Type 1 Diabetes, a condition that, despite its prevalence, is often misunderstood. “Having the appropriate resources and information on hand is essential when facing a condition like Type 1 Diabetes,” Hall said. “My goal behind sponsoring this legislation is to ensure a better and brighter future for those who live with this condition.”
The bill also outlines the minimum information that should be included in the materials, ensuring that parents and guardians have access to essential knowledge about managing Type 1 Diabetes.
House Bill 633 is expected to receive additional hearings in the House Public Health Policy Committee as lawmakers continue to consider the legislation.
