The 180th Fighter Wing, based in Toledo, will be conducting nighttime flying operations this week, from Monday, November 18 through Thursday, November 21, weather permitting. Residents in the Toledo area may notice increased activity in the skies, as F-16 fighter jets will be taking off and landing until approximately 8:30 p.m. each evening.
Additionally, residents in parts of southern Ohio and northern Michigan, particularly those located within designated Military Operating Airspaces, may observe or hear training missions during this period. These exercises may include the use of flares as part of the training protocols.
While training flights typically occur during daylight hours, nighttime operations are an essential component of readiness training for both aircrew and maintenance personnel. This training helps ensure that the 180th Fighter Wing is fully prepared for any mission, day or night.
In August 2024, more than 100 Airmen and 10 F-16 Fighting Falcons from the 180th Fighter Wing participated in Exercise Northern Lightning at Volk Field Air National Guard Base in Wisconsin. Northern Lightning focuses on the integration of joint and allied forces, emphasizing air-to-air and air-to-ground combat, dissimilar aircraft tactics, and both offensive and defensive counter-air operations. The exercise features realistic threats to ensure airmen are well-prepared for complex and dynamic combat scenarios.
The 180th Fighter Wing expressed appreciation for the understanding and continued support of the local community as they carry out this vital training. The operations are part of the wing’s ongoing commitment to maintaining operational excellence and readiness, ensuring their capability to respond effectively in both daytime and nighttime conditions.
