FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Ohio — Commuters traveling between Pickaway and Fairfield counties need to prepare for significant traffic disruptions starting this week.
Beginning Monday, June 1, the heavily traveled intersection of State Route 158 and Coonpath Road will completely close to all through-traffic. The total shutdown is required for the construction of a new $4.9 million single-lane roundabout designed to improve safety at the notorious crossroads.
The intersection is expected to remain entirely closed for roughly six months, with an estimated completion date set for November 2026.
Project Scope and Local Access
While preliminary site work for Project ID 111621 technically began this spring, the full-scale intersection closure marks the official start of heavy construction. The safety overhaul is a joint priority for regional transportation officials due to the intersection’s history of high-speed collisions.
The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) notes that while the intersection itself will be an active, impassable construction zone, local access will be strictly maintained for residents who live directly along Coonpath Road and SR 158 up to the closure points. All other motorists will be forced onto regional detours.
Official Detour Routes
Because this closure severs a major connector route, drivers should expect added travel time and are advised to utilize the following state-sanctioned detours:
For SR 158 Thru-Traffic:
- Northbound: Take U.S. 22 East $\rightarrow$ SR 37 North $\rightarrow$ SR 256 West back to SR 158.
- Southbound: Take SR 256 East $\rightarrow$ SR 37 South $\rightarrow$ U.S. 22 West back to SR 158.
For Coonpath Road Thru-Traffic:
- Drivers will be routed via Coonpath Road to the Columbus-Lancaster Road corridor, utilizing U.S. 33, Miller Farm Run, Carroll Northern Road, Pleasantville Road, and SR 37 to bypass the construction zone.
Driver Tip: Commuters are highly encouraged to map out their morning and evening routes ahead of time. You can monitor real-time traffic speeds, delays, and progress updates for this project by checking the OHGO interactive traffic map or mobile app throughout the summer.
