This past Friday night Officers from the Commercial Point Police Department participated in firearms training to better train them for situations that could occur. The firearms training took place during the late evening into night that required them to use lighting and techniques outside of the normal range qualifications and day shooting scenarios. Most deadly situations that law enforcement face occur during the late evenings and night where officers are presented with unique challenges.
The training included scenario training requiring officers to make use of a flashlight to determine what the situation is, target and threat identification using firearm mounted lights, various/unusual shooting positions, movement from and around vehicles in addition to the standard marksmanship, reloading and use of cover training that would take place during a normal daytime training event.
The training was conducted by Sgt. Hiroki Barker of the Commercial Point Police who is an Ohio Peace Officer Academy certified firearms instructor in addition to firearms instructor background from his service in the US Marine Corps. The Commercial Point Police Department currently utilizes Glock 9mm handguns, Remington 12 gauge shotguns, AR 15 style patrol carbines as their standard issued firearms and M14 rifles for unusual or unique situations. CPPD Firearms training is set to be completed approximately every 90 days surpassing the annual state mandated firearms qualification.
Chief Jordan also wishes to extend his appreciation to the Pickaway Sportsman’s Club for providing and maintaining ranges that they allow local law enforcement to use. Additionally, we also appreciate the neighbors of the range for their understanding when these noisy events take place for officers to be trained during less than ideal times.
