PICKAWAY COUNTY — Local bird enthusiasts and nature lovers are being called to the front lines of conservation this week as Pickaway County officially joins the Ohio Sandhill Crane Survey.

The annual event, a massive citizen science effort, is led by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife in partnership with the International Crane Foundation and the Ohio Bird Conservation Initiative. The goal is simple but critical: track the recovery of the Sandhill Crane, a species currently listed as threatened in the state of Ohio.

Eyes on the Sky

On Saturday, April 18th, volunteers will fan out across the county to monitor designated “survey blocks” during the early morning hours. By documenting these majestic birds, residents help biologists track population growth and identify key wetland habitats that require protection.

The survey is designed for everyone—not just expert birders. According to the Pickaway County Park District, no prior experience is required. Volunteers will be provided with full instructions and reporting guidelines.

Event Details

  • When: Saturday, April 18th
  • Time: 6:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. (A short morning count)
  • Where: Various locations throughout Pickaway County (Specific blocks will be assigned upon registration)
  • What to Bring: Volunteers are encouraged to bring binoculars, dress for the weather, and wear comfortable walking shoes.

How to Get Involved

Registration is mandatory so that survey blocks can be properly assigned to cover the county effectively. Interested residents should register by emailing [email protected].

Participation in the survey offers a unique opportunity for residents to contribute directly to a high-stakes conservation effort. As the Sandhill Crane population continues to fight for a foothold in Ohio, the data collected in Pickaway County will be vital to ensuring their future in the region’s wetlands.
