A Canal Winchester man who had originally faced multiple felony charges, including aggravated burglary and kidnapping, has been sentenced to prison after reaching a plea agreement in Pickaway County Common Pleas Court.
Daniel D. Vangundy, 64, of Canal Winchester, pleaded guilty to one count of strangulation, a third-degree felony. In exchange for the plea, the remaining charges—including aggravated burglary, kidnapping, and misdemeanor assault—were dismissed.
Judge Matthew Chafin sentenced Vangundy to the maximum penalty of 36 months in the custody of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction for the strangulation conviction.
According to court records, the charges stemmed from an incident involving a former intimate partner. Prosecutors alleged Vangundy unlawfully entered the victim’s home and violently attacked her. During the assault, the victim was able to contact a family member for help before law enforcement arrived and intervened in what authorities described as a potentially life-threatening situation.
Vangundy is identified as a pastor and serves as the president of CRAVE Ministries, a national ministry organization.
The case was resolved through a negotiated plea agreement, with the court imposing the maximum sentence permitted for the felony offense to which Vangundy pleaded guilty.
