POWELL, Ohio — In a major boost for regional conservation and education, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium announced a historic $10 million philanthropic investment on Thursday from The Worthington Companies Foundation and The McConnell Foundation.
The grant marks the second-largest philanthropic commitment in the Columbus Zoo’s history. It will directly fund the development of the upcoming John F. Wolfe Aquarium, expand operations at The Wilds, and enhance global and local conservation initiatives.
The Worthington Companies Foundation represents both Worthington Enterprises and Worthington Steel, local industrial staples that employ more than 1,800 people across Central Ohio.
“Their generosity will help bring the John F. Wolfe Aquarium to life, support The Wilds and advance our conservation programs here in Ohio and around the world,” said Tom Schmid, president and CEO of the Columbus Zoo and The Wilds. “Together, we are providing our community with unique and amazing ways to experience and learn about wildlife, while inspiring future generations to help protect these species.”
The historic donation continues a multi-generational partnership between the zoo and the McConnell family. In 1979, company founder John H. McConnell helped fund the zoo’s groundbreaking outdoor gorilla habitat, which helped revolutionize modern habitat design.
Today, his grandson, John H. McConnell II, serves as vice chairperson of the Columbus Zoo’s Board of Directors as well as a board director for both Worthington Enterprises and Worthington Steel.
“My grandfather believed deeply in giving back to the community, and his early support of the Zoo reflected that belief,” McConnell said. “My father, John P. McConnell, carried that relationship forward, and I’m proud to continue it today alongside the hardworking employees of Worthington Enterprises and Worthington Steel.”
Sonya Higginbotham, president of The Worthington Companies Foundation, credited the workforce at both steel and manufacturing divisions for making the donation possible, noting the company’s deep roots in Central Ohio and shared commitment to strengthening local communities.
