COLUMBUS, Ohio —The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is looking for young outdoor enthusiasts to participate in Camp Canopy—a forestry and wildlife focused summer camp. The registration deadline is quickly approaching, and high school-aged youth are encouraged to register by June 9 for the popular, hands-on program.

“Camp Canopy offers an excellent introduction to the field of natural resources for students,” ODNR Division of Forestry service forestry manager and camp co-director Jeremy Scherf said. “We are thrilled to provide forestry-focused programs for campers, where they can build lasting friendships and engage with industry professionals. This is a fantastic opportunity for kids, and we encourage everyone to register before spots fill up.”

Service Forestry Regional Manager and Camp Co-Director Jeremy Scherf teaches tree identification skills to a group of students at the 2023 Camp Canopy.

The camp runs from June 9-14 and will be held at Ohio FFA Camp Muskingum on Leesville Lake in Carroll County. Camp Canopy will feature an exciting educational line-up, including fascinating geology sessions, everything you need to know about reptiles, and an in-depth look at the fish in the watershed through electrofishing.

The electrofishing technique allows campers to get hands-on and up close to the fish without harming them. A new topic for this year is chainsaw safety, an essential skill for anyone planning to operate a chainsaw someday.

The week will also be packed with adventure-themed recreational activities such as rifle and shotgun shooting, day and night hiking, and a kayaking excursion. In addition, students will participate in the planting of a tree to celebrate ODNR’s 75th anniversary. Join us for a fun-filled week of learning and adventure!

Students who have completed the eighth grade through high school seniors graduating in 2024 are invited to attend Camp Canopy, which was previously known as the Ohio Forestry and Wildlife Conservation Camp. Sponsorships are available.

Camp Canopy is operated by the Ohio Forestry Association Foundation, a non-profit corporation dedicated to the conservation of Ohio’s forests and forest industry. Instructors are professionals from ODNR, OSU Extension, and the state’s forest industry. For more information and to register for Camp Canopy, visit their website at campcanopy.com.
