Athens, Ohio (March 1, 2024) – The Athens County Sheriff’s Office is urging all vehicle owners to check for open safety recalls on their vehicles during National Vehicle Safety Recalls Week, which runs from March 4th to 10th, 2024. This week coincides with the beginning of Daylight Saving Time on March 10th.

Importance of Checking for Recalls:

  • In 2022 alone, over 1,050 safety recalls affected more than 31 million vehicles and other automotive equipment in the United States.
  • Recalls address safety-related defects that could pose a serious risk to drivers, passengers, and others on the road.
  • Checking for and addressing recalls is free and can be done easily.

Sheriff Smith’s Message:

“During Vehicle Safety Recalls Week, we encourage everyone to take a few minutes to check for open safety recalls on their vehicles,” said Sheriff Smith. “Every recall is important and should be addressed promptly for your safety and the safety of others on the road.”

Two Ways to Check for Recalls:

  1. NHTSA VIN Look-Up Tool (NHTSA.gov/recalls):
    • Enter your vehicle’s 17-digit VIN to see if it has any open safety recalls.
    • Sign up for recall alerts to receive notifications about future recalls.
  2. SaferCar App (iOS and Android):
    • Download the free app and add your vehicle information.
    • Receive alerts about any safety recalls issued for your vehicle and related equipment.

Staying Informed:

  • Both methods are free and easy to use. You will need your vehicle’s VIN, located on the driver’s side windshield or your registration/insurance card.
  • Even with manufacturer notifications, millions of recalled vehicles go unrepaired each year.
  • Checking regularly and participating in Vehicle Safety Recalls Week can help keep everyone safe on the roads.
