CIRCLEVILLE, OH — A.W. Marion State Park is set to become a vibrant hub of culture and conservation this weekend as the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and ArtsaRound host a special America 250 community event.

On Saturday, May 9, from noon to 4:00 PM, the park’s marina and memorial area will transform into an open-air festival celebrating the intersection of Ohio’s natural beauty and its artistic heritage.

Honoring a Conservation Pioneer

The festivities will kick off at noon with a high-profile dedication of a new historical marker honoring Alonzo W. Marion. A native of Pickaway County, Marion was a towering figure in Ohio history, serving as the very first director of the ODNR from 1949 to 1957.

The marker will serve as a permanent tribute to Marion’s life’s work in agriculture and soil conservation—efforts that paved the way for the state park system Ohioans enjoy today.

A Day of Music and Masterpieces

Following the ceremony, the Pickaway County Community Band will provide a live soundtrack as guests explore a variety of family-friendly attractions:

  • Outdoor Art Gallery: A curated showcase featuring the works of local artists against the scenic backdrop of Hargus Lake.
  • Live Performances: Musicians and performers will take the stage at the A.W. Marion Monument throughout the afternoon.
  • Local Flavors: Food vendors will be on-site to offer a variety of refreshments.

Hands-On Nature Experiences

For those looking to get their hands dirty—or colorful—the park naturalist will lead two unique workshops:

  • Lakeside Watercolor (1:30 PM): An artistic session where participants use water directly from Hargus Lake to create paintings while learning about water quality.
  • Tree Journaling Hike (3:00 PM): A guided trek along the Perimeter Trail. Hikers will identify local foliage and create their own take-home field guides. (Note: Closed-toe shoes are required for this activity.)

Gold Medal Standard

The event highlights why Ohio’s state park system was recently named No. 1 in America, receiving the 2025 National Gold Medal Award. By blending education, art, and history, ODNR continues to set the standard for park management and community engagement.

Admission to the event is free. The park is located at 7317 Warner-Huffer Road in Circleville.
