CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio — An ongoing investigation into a tragic February car crash has resulted in the arrest of a Circleville man on charges of aggravated vehicular homicide.

Sheriff Matthew O. Hafey announced that on Monday, July 13, 2026, detectives from the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office took John F. Hill, 60, into custody following an indictment by a Pickaway County Grand Jury.

Hill is currently being held in the Pickaway County Jail on a $100,000 bond and is scheduled for arraignment in the Pickaway County Common Pleas Court on Wednesday, July 15, 2026.

Grand Jury Indictment and Charges
The grand jury handed down a two-count indictment against Hill, charging him with:

Aggravated Vehicular Homicide (a second-degree felony)

Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs of Abuse (OVI) (a first-degree misdemeanor)

A Hero’s Final Act
The charges stem from a devastating collision on the morning of February 27, 2026, at 2611 Walnut Creek Pike in Circleville.

According to sheriff’s deputies, Hill was driving a southbound 2025 Nissan Sentra when he traveled off the right side of the road. The vehicle went through two yards before entering a driveway, where it rammed a parked 2022 Chevrolet Equinox.

Standing in the driveway at the time was Laura J. Hammond, 52, of Mt. Sterling, along with a young child who was playing nearby.

Seconds before the impact, Hammond realized the out-of-control vehicle was heading directly toward them. In a selfless, lifesaving act, Hammond pushed the young child out of the vehicle’s path.

Almost immediately after saving the child, Hammond was struck by the Nissan and pinned between the two vehicles.

Aftermath and Rescue Efforts
Emergency medical crews rushed to the scene. Hammond was transported by Circleville EMS to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in Columbus, where she tragically succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased.

The child, whose life was saved by Hammond’s quick actions, was transported to OhioHealth Berger Hospital for minor, non-life-threatening injuries.

Hill was also taken to OhioHealth Berger Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, where troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol assisted deputies in launching the initial investigation.

Sheriff Hafey expressed his gratitude to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Pickaway County Engineer’s Office, and the numerous local fire and EMS departments—including Pickaway Township, Circleville, Harrison Township, and Scioto Township—for their critical assistance both at the crash site and throughout the subsequent investigation.
