An inmate in Ross County Charged with Columbus Murder

ROSS – A man already serving 20 years for other crimes has now been charged with the murder of a 62-year-old man in Columbus in 2021.

According to Columbus Police on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, at 3:18AM, Columbus Police Officers were called to the Sunoco station at 1799 E. Hudson St. on a report of a shooting. On arrival, officers found David Gaines, 62, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. CFD Medic 16 transported Gaines to Grant Medical Center in critical condition, where he was pronounced deceased by attending physicians at 4:19AM.

On Wednesday, December 28, 2023, the Franklin County Grand Jury indicted Dontrell Jaynes for Aggravated Murder and Aggravated Robbery for causing Gaines’ death. Jaynes is currently incarcerated at the Ross Correctional Institution where he is serving a prison sentence for an unrelated crime. The investigation into Gaines’ death has been ongoing since the date of his murder and this indictment is the result of Detective Westfall’s ongoing and determined efforts to bring Gaines’ murderer to justice.

Jaynes pleaded guilty to felonious assault, kidnapping, aggravated robbery, attempted murder, and obstruction of official business in February and received 20 years behind bars, he will now go to court to face murder charges.
