CLINTON COUNTY, Ohio — A tragic two-vehicle crash on Interstate 71 near the US 68 exit on Tuesday evening resulted in the death of an 18-year-old and left another person injured, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP).
The accident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. when a 2017 Subaru Legacy, driven by 21-year-old Loren Schorr of Chillicothe, collided with a southbound 2022 Ram pickup truck driven by 32-year-old Cody Gill of Annville, Kentucky. The impact of the crash caused the Ram to veer into the right lane, while the Subaru was forced into the median.
The passenger in the Subaru, 18-year-old Makell Rhinehart of Chillicothe, was transported to Clinton Memorial Hospital by Wilmington EMS, where she was later pronounced dead, OSHP reports.
Schorr was also taken to Clinton Memorial Hospital by Port William EMS for treatment of his injuries. The driver and passengers in the Ram pickup were unharmed.
The crash resulted in the closure of all southbound lanes of I-71. Nearby northbound lanes were also shut down due to a separate accident involving 53,000 pounds of granite that had fallen onto the interstate.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted by the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, Wilmington Fire and EMS, and Port William EMS at the scene of the accident.
The incident remains under investigation.
